So, you’ve decided to go with Invisalign to straighten your teeth. Why wouldn’t you? She’s the cooler, more nonchalant sister to traditional braces!
While, yes, Invisalign offers many benefits such as low risk of dental issues, improvement in oral health, comfortability, and convenience, you can throw all these perks out the window without proper cleaning and maintenance. At Totalcare Dental and Dermal, we strive to provide the highest quality service, assisting you on the journey to enhance your smile. That’s why we’ve come up with a list of tips and reminders to help you maintain and clean your Invisalign aligners.

Take them out!
Always, ALWAYS, remember to remove your Invisalign before eating. This may sound like a simple task; however, many forget to take out their aligners before digging in, making them susceptible to stains and damage.
Avoid sugary, acidic and sticky foods
Although you’ve taken out your aligners, certain sugary, acidic and sticky foods can cause discolouration of your natural teeth and potentially transfer to your Invisalign. We also recommend avoiding too much coffee and alcoholic drinks. That unfortunately means keeping the wine and dining to a minimum.

Brush, Brush, Brush!
With having Invisalign, comes having to brush your teeth more often throughout the day. Extra points if you also floss! Brushing your teeth after each meal, before putting your aligners back in, will help reduce the risk of bacteria buildup in your teeth and help avoid other issues such as bad breath or gum inflammation.

Clean and Clear
To ensure your Invisalign aligners stay clean and clear, it is crucial to clean them twice a day. Once when waking up in the morning and again before going to bed at night. We know what you might be thinking. “One extra step to do at the crack of dawn and before hitting the hay?” But we like to see it as simply an extra step to brushing your teeth… or, more like three steps:

  1. Rinse: Rinse your aligners with lukewarm water. It is important to avoid using hot water when cleaning your Invisalign as this can cause them to misshape.
  2. Brush: Using a soft-bristled toothbrush and a non-abrasive toothpaste, thoroughly brush your aligners.
  3. Soak: After rinsing off the toothpaste with lukewarm water, soak the aligners with either Invisalign’s cleaning solution or their cleaning crystals for 3 minutes. Rinse the solution off and leave them to dry before storing them in their protective case. The case itself should be regularly cleaned.
